The Metaxas regime: Clientelistic Fascism

The Greek communists called the Metaxas dictatorship “Monarchofascism”. Some authors deny the fascist character and describe it as a simple royal dictatorship with fascist leanings. On the other hand, German historian Heinz A. Richter thinks that the regime of the 4th August 1936 was fascist, and with this transcription of a speech he tries to prove it. According to him, it is precisely the clientelistic system in Greece which permitted a direct transformation of the Metaxas dictatorship to a full-fledged fascism.
